How to share a VPN Connection from your Computer

By

Introduction

First off, the reason why i am making this tutorial is because i did not find an explanation on how to share Internet between two computers via cable. Found a ton of tutorials about making it with the WIFI connection.

Also to let you know, I might make some typos since English is not my first language. Plus I am not a computer tech guy so i am just explaining how i went about this problem.

Why?

Why a VPN?
There can be many reasons why somebody would want to buy/own a VPN connection, for me there is one simple one. I want to benefit of the stuff that gets banned from Europe, for instance: Hulu, Pandora, Netflix and many others.

Why share the VPN Connection?
The reason why I want to share it is because i own a PS3, and there are some lovely apps on there that allow you to watch Netflix, and Hulu on there. I do not feel like hooking up the Computer each time i want to watch a movie.

What do I need?

You will need:
2 Devices you want to share the Connection with
2 Ethernet ports (some motherboards come with 2, ie. DFI)
An Internet Connection (can be direct with the Modem or connected with a Router/Switch/Hub)
The main computer needs to be connected with Internet (via CAT5 or whatever you prefer)
1 Crossover Cable (not sure if a normal CAT5 will do)

This is what I have used to make this work...
Since i only own a Notebook, i went out and bought a USB Ethernet port, so that ill have 2 Ethernet ports.
My Notebook has Windows 7 on it, and its connected directly to a modem with a CAT5 cable. My USB Ethernet adapter is connected with my PS3 over a crossover cable.

Lets get started!

1. lets say your computer is on and you have everything plugged in.
2. go on the Windows button (start menu)
3. type in the search field "network and sharing center"
it should look somewhat like this...

Network and Sharing Center
Network and Sharing Center

4. on the left side youll read "change adapter settings" click on that

5. your adapters will probably say Local Area Connection 1, 2 etc. i just renamed them to make it easier to see what is what.
6. if you choose the USB ethernet connection and double click it and press on details it should look something like this.

7. The next thing you do is choose the VPN connection you want to share with your other device.
8. In my case i choose VPN NYC so i right click that and click on properties
9. On the top of the new opened Window you will have tabs click on the sharing tab

10. check "allow other network ..." and if you want the "Allow other network users..."
11. select what connection you want to share it too, in my case its the USB Ethernet
12. click on OK and reconnect to your vpn connection and it should be working.

I hope it worked for you! Enjoy
